What is a kidney stone?

Kidney stones or renal stones are hard mineral deposits in the kidneys that form due to various factors such as inadequate water intake, high dietary sodium, high oxalate intake, high animal protein intake, certain disease conditions, some medications and supplements, etc. These kidney stones initially produce no symptoms and develop gradually. As their size increases and they start to move in the kidneys, they can cause severe pain in the lower back and flank region. This pain sometimes radiates to the groin area.

When a person has an increased mineral concentration in their urine due to drinking less water or any other reason, it puts them at risk of forming these stones.

Symptoms of Kidney Stones

• Lower back/Flank pain: There is severe pain in the lower back and in the flank region when stones start to move inside the kidney.
• Difficulty urinating: Patient feels difficulty while urinating; sometimes he can feel an obstruction.
• Pain/burning while urinating
• Blood in Urine: There can be blood in urine; it can appear as drops or in the form of reddish urine.
• Nausea and vomiting: Some patients may feel nausea and even vomiting with this pain.

Types of Kidney Stones

1. Calcium Stone

These are the most common kidney stones and form due to the deposition of Calcium Oxlate or Calcium Phosphate salts.

2. Uric Acid Stones

They form when urine becomes too acidic due to some metabolic disorders like gout, diabetes, and obesity. Or because of high purine intake in the diet.

3. Cystine stone

It forms due to a rare genetic disorder, cystinuria.

4. Struvite stones

Struvite or infection stones form in response to a urinary tract infection (UTI). Sometimes they grow in a large, branched shape.
